Chalmers Mackay Music School (Inverurie)

Chalmers Mackay Music School offers a multi-instrumental education facility, geared towards students of all ages.

The School was founded in 1988 and over the years has flourished into the largest private Music establishment in the North East of Scotland, with 27 specialist tutors covering tuition in keyboard, strings, guitar, woodwind, brass and percussion.

The School has 4 different Studios: At 41 High St, Inverurie, 37 & 39 dee Street, Aberdeen, and an annexe at 3 Forest Road, Kintore. All Studios provide tutorial rooms fully equipped for teaching individuals or group lessons.

The Main Office is operated from 41 High Street, Inverurie and office staff are in attendance there daily (except Sundays) between 9 am and 5pm - an answering facility operates after office hours with an emergency contact number should a student want to get immediate response to a query.

So what does Chalmers Mackay have to offer?

Musical learning to suit anyone, from absolute beginners to advanced students....

There are lessons in

  • Piano, Keyboard, Accordion
  • Violin/fiddle, Classical and Acoustic Guitar, Rock Guitar, Banjo
  • Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Recorder, Cornet, Chanter
  • Drumkit
  • Singing

Students can choose to follow a Classical based Course, or a lighter ‘Pop'/Rock based Course depending on what they want to get out of the lessons. Everyone is encouraged to progress at their own enjoyable pace, with the emphasis very much on the ‘enjoyable'! and the musically gifted can be challenged through trying the exam and performance programmes we have on offer.

All Tutors are qualified to teach, and hold enhanced disclosures for working with children. Tutors follow their own structured method of teaching, and students are offered an annual assessment around June time to give an indication as to how they are progressing. The Music school strives to offer a high standard of Service. Tutors attend ‘in-service' meetings over the yearly session, and most of them take part in professional public performance outside of the Music School.

There are various Lesson time options:

  • 15 minute (by special arrangement)
  • 30 minute
  • 45 minute (for the upper graded exam pupils usually)
  • 1 Hour (similar)

Students are offered an 8 week trial of lessons initially with the chance to fully enroll at the School after this period is completed. For those who are unsure of what they want to try, an Assessment lesson can be given on an instrument of their choice. Office staff are available to advise on all aspects of what the School has to offer.

Graded exams are available for Classical, Pop and Jazz, Standard Grade and Higher Music (in this case there is a liaison between the general school music departments and the Music School)

All pupils are encouraged to take part in our concerts and musical events, held over the 40 week session, and the School has numerous bands on offer for eager students who want to play in this situation: - to date we have:

  • 6 Rock Bands
  • A Celtic Rock Ceilidh Band
  • A Jazz Band
  • A Country Rock Band

The Band Programme was started when the Music School began back in 1997.

Playing in a group or ensemble introduces a musician to a necessary part of musical learning and discipline - another avenue of adventure for our students.

The Music school also runs a 24 track Recording Studio in our Dee Street premises. A chance for students to record those special tunes and songs!

So really there is such a lot to choose from with Chalmers Mackay - it's a happening place to be involved with and a fun place to work in, ask any of the tutors!
